East London Sailing Club...

Cornish Services

Hi All,

Well the AGM and prize giving has been and gone, first of all we should thank the old committee for their devotion during the 2008/9 season, and indeed welcome the new members during the past year.

As for the new committee, we would like to wish them well for the coming season, and sincerely hope we can grow the club membership and get more of the ‘hibernated’ sailors out of their cocoons’ and back on the water.

For your information the committee for 2009/10 is as :

A big welcome to our new committee members this year, Brian Rusch for accepting probably the busiest position in the club, Rear Commodore dinghies, as most of the club activities are in this section. Also to Bruce Warner for accepting the responsibility of the rescue boat, no easy job, he has already spent many hours on repairing the winch, that required a great deal of brute force and effort ,many thanks Bruce, to Michelle Rusch for stepping in half way through last season to take on the treasurers job, and for accepting to continue for the coming season ( a brave girl). To Anthea Scheepers to organize the ladies section, heard on the grape-vine she is trying to book the ‘Chippendales’ !

Judy and Kathy are now the contacts for booking the club and also for catering. They can organize outside functions as well as functions at the club. Support them and you support the club ! I would venture to say an excellent committee to for the 2009/10 season. WELCOME ABOARD.

With regard to the AGM, all went smoothly, no big objections and good constructive discussions took place. One thing that must be mentioned, for the first time in YEARS we were able to produce audited accounts, thanks to a lot of work from Michelle and Angie. Also a big thanks to Alan Randle of D.J.Jackson & Associates for their efforts to get the figures out on time (literally 5.30 pm the night before) ALL FREE OF CHARGE.

The rescue boat is in good order, we had new control cables fitted during the past year, proper marine stuff, not converted car cables that only last a few months. The next step in this direction is to bring the boat up to scratch i.e. Certificate of fitness (COF)and then get skippers certificates for the operators (COC) There will be a list on the notice board if you are interested in sitting this exam. It consists of 2 full days instruction, usually Sat and Sunday, then later the exam which can be done on an evening. There is a charge, payable to the NSRI, but we are trying to negotiate a discount fee.

As most people will have heard, the sail-past date has been brought forward to the 5th September to join in with BRYC sail past. Also this is the date set to enrol our new juniors for the 2009/10 season.

The program for the day should be as follows;

Brian our new Rear Commodore Dinghies, will very shortly have the new sailing calendar out,

But I can confirm our opening of season cocktail evening will be on the 19th September, and on Saturday the 20th we are reviving the ‘49’ Cup race. This is for all boats Deep/Keelers and dinghies. This trophy is called the 49 cup as it was the first race ever held by East London Yacht Club, in 1949. I wonder if we can find any member that actually took part in that race ?

Also I can confirm that through a friend of a friend, we have been able to re-launch the ELYC web page. It now does exists, but not quite finished as we are trying to update pictures and information. The site being; http://www.eastlondonyachtclub.com/

Wednesday nights are still going well, come and join us, bring a friend. We are still running the once a month sponsored suppers, the next being …………… ?
